March 28, 2021 ~ "Victory Through Suffering"

This text is tailored to teach us that it is better to suffer for doing good rather than for doing evil because Jesus’ righteous suffering led to his victory and those who have trusted in him share in his victory through suffering. 

I. What Is Clear (v. 18, 22)

    A. Jesus suffered for the unrighteous once for all to bring us back to God. (v. 18)

    B. Jesus is now victoriously reigning with all things in subjection to him. (v. 22)

II. What Is Unclear (v.19-21) 

    A. When Jesus defeated sin and death, he proclaimed his victory over the demonic realm to them. (v. 19-20a)

    B. Baptism symbolizes the union with Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection for those who have trusted in him. (v. 20a-21)

March 21, 2021 ~ "Honoring Christ in Every Setting"

1 Peter 3:8-17 spells out how and why we should live differently, no matter what situation we are in.

I. Honoring Christ in how we relate to other people (v.8-12)

    A. Be of one mind, sympathetic, love like family, tenderhearted & humble in attitude. (v.8)

    B. You are called into God’s family to bless others - not retaliate when mistreated. (v. 9)

    C. Why live this way? (v.10-12)

II. Honoring Christ when wrongly accused or mistreated (v.13-17)

    A. As you endure mistreatment with hope and joy, be ready to explain it! (v.13-15)

    B. Your manner & behavior should always match your message. (v.16)

    C. You are called to do things God’s way - even when you suffer for it. (v.17)

I. A Word to Wives

    A. Submit to your own husbands to win them to Christ. (v. 1-2)

    B. Be known for your character not for your clothing to demonstrate your hope is in God. (v. 3-6)

II. A Word to Husbands

    A. Understand your wives. (v. 7a)

    B. Honor your wives as if they were heirs with you of the grace of life.  (v. 7b)

    C. Why? So that your prayers are not hindered. (v. 7c)

    3. Because Christ’s suffering provides the power for us to suffer unjustly. (v. 24-25)

III. The church is the new Israel. (v. 9-10, cf. Isa. 43:20-21, Ex. 19:5-6, Hos. 2:23)

    A. Put away all that opposes love. (v. 1)

January 31, 2021 ~ CBR: "Do Not be Terrified"

Do not be terrified, instead hope in Christ and his coming kingdom. 

I. What should we expect? (Luke 21:8-12)

    A. We should expect war, natural disasters, and persecution.

    B. We should expect Jesus to be in control. (v. 8-12)

II. What does it look like to be terrified? (Isaiah 8:11-12)

    A. Being terrified looks like believing rumors of secret plots without evidence. 

    B. Being terrified looks like fearing what the people around us fear.   

III. How should we respond to our circumstances? (Isaiah  8:13-14, Luke 21:13-19, Isaiah 11:1-9)

    A. Honor God as holy. (Isa. 8:13a)

    B. Fear God by taking sanctuary in him. (Isa. 8:13b-14)

    C. Use this time as an opportunity to make much of Jesus. (Luke 21:13-15)

    D. Remember Christ will preserve us. (Luke 21:16-19)

    E. Hope in Christ and his coming kingdom. (Isaiah 11:1-9)

January 24, 2021 ~ "A Holy Hope"

II. If you have been born again to a living hope in Jesus, be holy in all your conduct as obedient children. (v. 14-16)

III. If you have been born again to a living hope in Jesus, conduct yourselves with a hope-filled fear. (v. 17-21)
